Senior Teddy Kaufman will make his first start of the season when USF (1-5) hosts No. 11 Miami (5-1) at Steinbrenner Field today at 4 p.m. as part of the Florida Four series, featuring Florida and Florida State.
The Hurricanes, averaging 10.5 runs a game, won their first five games before losing the final game of a three-game set against Manhattan College last weekend.
The Bulls managed just three hits in a 4-2 loss against Michigan on Sunday. USF has relied on its pitching to stay in games. Freshman Ray Delphey leads the starting pitchers with a 3.27 ERA and has the only win on the season.
Junior Andrew Barbosa has an ERA of 3.55, while last season’s Big East Pitcher of the Year, Randy Fontanez, has a 0-2 record with 4.72 ERA.
Outfielder Junior Carlin leads the team with 10 hits and a .400 average, collecting two hits in each of the three games in last weekend’s Big Ten/Big East Challenge, where the Bulls went 1-2.
Today’s game against USF will be Miami’s first road game, and it is expected to send freshman left-handed pitcher Stephen Ewing to the mound for his first start.
