Tennis trys to make lasting impression
The USF women’s tennis team has its last chance to impress before the start of the spring season. Coach Gigi Fernandez and the Bulls need a good performance in order to be considered for a preseason ranking.
“The whole team is healthy and we’re ready to compete,” Fernandez said. “Were looking for the top of the lineup to do some damage … this is our last tournament and we want to end the fall season on a high note.”
After reaching the Flight ‘A’ singles final at the Gator Fall Classic and the doubles finals at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association South Regional, Gabriela Duch hopes to improve.
“I’m want to see how Gabby continues to play,” Fernandez said. “If she can keep her level of play up, she might do well enough to receive an individual ranking.”
The freshman from Monterrey, Mexico, also reached the doubles finals at the ITA South Regional with partner Marie F. Lord Andrade.
Another player Fernandez is keeping an eye on is freshman Yuri Kurashima.
“I’m interested to see how Kurashima does,” Fernandez said. “She’s coming off knee surgery and I’m interested to see how she handles a match situation.”
This will be Fernandez’s last chance to see her players compete in a match before she submits lineups Nov. 12
