Oracle, ‘Omnibus’ and ‘static’ take combined 13 awards

The Oracle was named second best all-around student daily at this weekend’s Society of Professional Journalists conference held in Atlanta. The paper finished second to The Red & Black, the student newspaper at the University of Georgia.

Omnibus, USF’s literary magazine, was also named second best in the category of a student magazine published once a year. Static magazine finished third in the same category.

The three publications competed against other student-run publications that make up Region 3 of SPJ, which include more than 20 universities in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina and Eastern Tennessee.

Individual awards were also presented at the conference.Oracle staffers received a total of seven awards for column writing, news and sports reporting and photography.

Static staffers received three awards – for writing and photo illustration – for contributions to Spring 2001 issue of the magazine.

The Oracle was also named best student daily by Florida Leader magazine earlier this month, for the second year in a row, beating The Independent Florida Alligator, a student-produced paper at the University of Florida, considered by some to be The Oracle’s No. 1 competition.
