Gregory leaves USF
Less than a month after he was “released from his duties” as offensive coordinator at USF, Greg Gregory accepted an offensive coordinator position at South Alabama, coach Jim Leavitt announced in a statement Thursday.
Leavitt demoted Gregory, who had interviewed for a tight ends job at Florida, on Jan. 18. Gregory remained on staff, but his role “hadn’t been determined.”
“Coach Gregory is a tremendous coach, and he did a tremendous job with our offense,” Leavitt said in a statement. “That unit has been very successful under his leadership. South Alabama made a terrific hire, and I firmly believe he will do a great job.”
South Alabama is in the early stages of building a football program. The team will play games in Division I-AA in 2010 and join the Sun Belt Conference in Division I-A
in 2013.
The Bulls struggled offensively last season, seeing a significant drop off from 2007, when they broke nine school records.
Leavitt has not announced an offensive coordinator yet, but passing game coordinator and receivers coach Mike Canales, who was USF’s offensive coordinator from 1996-2000, is a strong candidate.
