Former Bull released by Patriots
The New England Patriots released former USF football player Kenyatta Jones on Sunday after the offensive lineman allegedly burned a roommate with scalding water.
Jones, 24, was arrested Oct. 21, a day after he was accused of burning his roommate Mark Paul, who is also his personal assistant. Paul, who was treated for second and third degree burns, said in a police report that Jones threw a cup of hot water on him after a dispute. Jones faces charges of assault with intent to maim, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and mayhem. Mayhem is a felony charge, and Jones, who pleaded not guilty to the charges, faces up to 20 years in prison.
Jones was a tackle at USF from 1997 to 2000. The Patriots selected him in the 2001 NFL draft, making Jones the second former USF player to be drafted after the Cleveland Browns opened the round by taking former USF cornerback Anthony Henry. Jones, who has been inactive this season after an off-season knee surgery, started 11 games at right tackle for New England last season. In 2001, he became the first former USF player to play for a Super Bowl winning team when the Patriots won Super Bowl XXXV but did not play in the game.
The Patriots would not comment on whether his release coincided with his arrest.
