USF finishes weekend 1-0-1 in South Carolina
The Bulls escaped the Gamecock Classic with a win and a tie this weekend.
USF (2-1-3) faced off with host South Carolina (2-4-1) on Friday night with the match going into two overtime periods.
South Carolina took the lead early with a Jeffrey Torda goal in the fifth minute.
The Bulls were out-shot 15 to nine in the match, but answered back with a goal by junior forward Kennedy Adablah in the 19th minute to tie it at one a piece.
USF survived eight shots by South Carolina in the second half while only managing three.
Junior Edwin Moalosi’s recovery from a broken leg last year has been a topic of discussion this season, and the forward played 86 of 110 minutes in the match.
The Bulls had Saturday to rest before an 11 a.m. match Sunday against the Kentucky Wildcats, in which Moalosi saw 51 minutes of action in the 90-minute match.
Freshman midfielder Marcus Epps knocked home the first goal for USF from ten yards out in the 14th minute off an Adablah assist.
Fellow freshman midfielder Lindo Mfeka scored the second goal for USF in the 53rd minute with the assist from junior midfielder Gerardo Hernandez.
The Bulls’ 2-0 win was filled with aggressive play, as each team collected three yellow card penalties.
Senior USF goalkeeper Brentton Muhammad was strong in front of the net all weekend, with 11 saves and one goal allowed in 200 minutes of action.
USF will now practice in preparation for their inaugural American Athletic Conference season, which begins Friday at 7:30 p.m. against No. 5 Connecticut at Corbett Soccer Stadium.
