Daniels injures quad
The team’s decision to replace B.J. Daniels with true freshman Bobby Eveld at quarterback in the second half of USF’s 23-20 win at Miami was made because of a quad injury Daniels re-aggravated, coach Skip Holtz said at his press conference after the game.
Daniels didn’t practice Sunday, Holtz said, and will be re-evaluated this week.
“We came in at halftime … (and) he said he felt something pop in his leg,” Holtz said. “He wouldn’t tell me he couldn’t go. He kept saying, ‘Coach, I’m hurting, I can’t run, but if you need me to go, I’ll go.’ I said I can’t predict what they’re going to do. I’m not going to put you out there on one leg, and I turned and looked at Bobby and said, ‘Let’s go.'”
Eveld, who went 8-of-15 for 120 yards and led a game-tying touchdown drive late, appeared to put himself in position to be the starter for the rest of the season even if Daniels is healthy enough to play, but Holtz said after the game that he’ll evaluate the situation this week.
Injury updates
Cornerbacks Kayvon Webster and Mistral Raymond and center Sampson Genus didn’t practice Sunday because of injury, but Holtz said he expects all three back for the team’s game against Connecticut on Saturday … WR Lindsey Lamar (shoulder) practiced Sunday after leaving Saturday’s game … WR Joel Miller replaced Lamar, catching four passes for 60 yards.
