Bulls dinged up woes
Several USF players suffered injuries in last week’s 28-27 win against Rutgers. While some – including quarterback B.J. Daniels (turf toe) and running backs Demetris Murray and Mo Plancher (knee) – are regaining their health, coach Skip Holtz said others are limited.
Daniels, Murray and Plancher practiced Sunday, but senior left tackle Jamar Bass (ankle) and junior safety Jerrell Young (ankle) were held out and will be monitored throughout the week.
The Bulls play Louisville on Saturday.
“The two, as we’re moving forward with this, we’ll have to keep an eye on,” Holtz said. “They seem to be progressing. We’ll just have to follow up and see how they respond to some treatment.”
Bass has started six of eight games, while Young has started seven games.
Academics keep freshman RB out
Freshman running back Marcus Shaw, who has 108 rushing yards on 11 carries (9.8 average) this season, is “falling behind academically” and is being held out of practice, Holtz said Sunday.
Shaw hasn’t played in USF’s last two games after seeing action in the first six.
“I think he’s a very talented young man. I think he’s a guy that can help this football team, but at the same point in time, three years from now, I don’t want to be in this situation again with him,” Holtz said. “I think he needs to learn now that there’s a term ‘student-athlete,’ and it’s not professional … As I’ve told him, when his grades start to get back to a certain level, then we’ll start to talk about you getting on the field again.”
