IN BRIEF
University Police (UP) is holding a free bicycle registration today from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. on the north side of Cooper Hall.
Students, faculty and staff must provide their bicycles and photo identification to register.
This is part of a series of bicycle registrations to help UP track stolen or pawned bicycles, said UP spokeswoman Lt. Meg Ross.
Ross said according to the semiannual uniform crime report for 2009, 30 bicycles were stolen on campus between January and June.
When a student registers in the program, the bicycle’s serial number is put into the Florida Crime Information Center (FCIC), which is connected to the National Crime Information Center.
“If a registered bike is stolen and taken to a pawn shop, the serial number is flagged in the database, and the pawn shop cannot sell it,” Ross said.
UP is hoping these bicycle registrations will increase awareness of the program, Ross said.
Students can go to Parking and Transportation Services for free bicycle registration throughout the year.
