Drake storms through USF in doubleheader
Though USF turned on the offense late, it wasn’t enough to muster any victory Tuesday.
The Bulls lost both games of a doubleheader to Drake at the USF Softball Stadium, mostly because of USF’s struggles at the plate.
After the Bulls fell behind by four runs in the third inning, USF tried to come back in the bottom of the sixth when second baseman Janine Richardson scored off of Stormi Gryzbek’s roped single down the infield line.
The Bulls got closer after two runs in the seventh, but it wasn’t enough.
And it didn’t get much better in the second game, as USF was held to just two hits in a 4-0 loss.
Sophomore Brittany Bowles pitched 6 2/3 innings in the first loss, giving up two earned runs on eight hits. Capri Catalano, one of five starting pitchers USF uses and who started the second game, gave up three solo home runs.
“The second pitcher tonight did really well, but I think we need to get back to the basics when it comes to hitting,” said assistant coach Stacey Heintz. “Every week we look at the teams we are facing and try to find the best matchups for our pitchers.”
The Bulls stay in the Tampa Bay area this weekend, hosting Northern Illinois, Oklahoma State, Florida A&M, Towson and Florida State in Clearwater.
