Letter to the Editor: SDS calls to defend affirmative action
(Today) at 5 p.m., Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) will be holding a rally at Cooper Hall to defend affirmative action programs, which are currently under attack nationally in the Supreme Court case of Fisher v. University of Texas- Austin.
In Florida, affirmative action in college admissions is currently banned by the One Florida (initiative), which has resulted in a decrease in black enrollment across the state.
At USF, 11 percent of our student body is Black while the actual demographic of Tampa is 26 percent Black. At Florida State University and the University of Florida, the rate of Black enrollment is even lower, at a mere seven percent.
Racist admissions, such as legacy policies and racist (tests) originating from eugenics programs continue to negatively impact the educational opportunities offered to the African-American community.
Affirmative action programs were valuable gains won through the struggles of African-American and other oppressed nationality students in the 1960s and 70s against segregation and institutionalized racism in education.
Because SDS upholds that education is a right for all, we believe students should join us in demanding affirmative action, an end to racist admissions policies, to ensure increased Black enrollment!

OPINION: USF’s Taylor Swift class will start soon. Here’s 3 other artists that deserve a course.
No, I am not “ready for it.” This fall, USF will offer a Cultural Studies and Popular Arts course that will look at the themes and literary influences in Taylor Swift’s lyrics. “For the first time, the class will be looking at music, rather than film and literature,” said Associate Professor of English Emily Jones, […]
OPINION: USF students, your favorite meal could be off campus
While campus has a lot of food places to offer, these options can become repetitive. For me, my choices have been narrowed down to the Marshall Student Center restaurants or the Cooper Hall Subway. I knew it was time to venture off campus for lunch when the lady at Subway remembered my name and order […]
OPINION: Attention USF students, don’t let social media decide who you vote for
It’s 2024, folks. Already, another election year is here before us. If you choose to exercise your right of democracy and plan to participate in the voting process, how do you get your information? What sort of factors determine who you choose as your top pick for office? No matter what side of the political […]
OPINION: Here’s a list of USF’s best and worst bathrooms
As an introvert, bathrooms are my safe space. They have been places for me to isolate and decompress when social situations get too overwhelming. Throughout my time at USF, I’ve found much comfort in the bathrooms on campus during times where I just needed to get away. After going on a ladies’ bathroom excursion, in […]
OPINION: USF students, we need to balance work and leisure
There is something so magical about a juicy slice of watermelon, neighborhood backyard barbecues and the nostalgia of playing in the sprinkler when we were kids. These things wouldn’t be special if we had them year-round. Thankfully, we have summer break to enjoy a rejuvenating respite from our busy schedules during both semesters and bask […]
OPINION: USF’s football stadium will add much to college experience
While I love watching college football, I often find myself canceling on my friends when I am invited to a game after looking at the drive time to Raymond James Stadium. Whether you’re a commuter or someone who lives on campus, it’s no secret that going to watch a USF football game is inconvenient. There’s […]
