USF partners with MacDill Air Force Base
For the next three years, USF and MacDill Air Force Base will be partners with the focus of expanding the university’s high-impact opportunities for students in STEM programs, according to a Monday press release.
President Rhea Law said the relationship will be mutually beneficial as students learn from new experiences and earn academic credit, and the projects from the base will get to utilize USF’s facilities.
Additional benefits from the collaboration will include a new network of internships and research projects backed by potential mentoring from those affiliated with the base, according to the release.
The USF Institute of Applied Engineering was also awarded $10 million to engage students in the process of fulfilling the needs of the 6th Air Refueling Wing and U.S. Central Command, based in MacDill. Students involved can anticipate continuing research and prototyping as part of the collaboration.
This is USF’s second major partnership this year with sights set on bolstering security-related opportunities. In June, the university brought on retired General Kenneth McKenzie Jr. to take on the role of executive director of the new Global and National Security Institute.
In contrast to the applied sciences that the partnership with MacDill is championing, the Global and National Security Institute focused more on the real-world application of policy development as opposed to hands-on tech experience.
