Women’s tennis on a roll
The USF women’s tennis team earned its second consecutive shutout with a 7-0 victory against Dartmouth on Saturday.
The Bulls beat the Big Green, a team they faced last year and beat 5-2.
“We were familiar with their style of play and that gave us an edge today,” coach Agustin Moreno said. “We needed this win today because the rest of the season we play ranked opponents.”
Sophomore Liz Cruz led the team to victory, pairing with Iciri Rai to earn an 8-2 doubles victory. Cruz then shut out Jamie Caplan 6-0, 6-0 in singles play.
“I was able to force my opponent into making some mistakes,” Cruz said. “I was hitting my shots today and happy about the results.”
Unlike last season, the No. 41 Bulls were able to capture the doubles point and close out their singles matches without going to a third set. Last March against the Big Green, USF lost the doubles point and had two singles matches reach the third set.
“Our team has improved so much mentally,” Cruz said. “Everyone on the team knows what is expected of them, and coach Moreno has really helped us close the games.”
The Bulls (12-3) are ranked No. 41 according to the Fila Collegiate Tennis Rankings. Dartmouth dropped to 4-8 on the season.
