OPINION: At USF, it’s not sweater weather just yet
“Christian Girl Autumn” is on its way, but don’t pull out your infinity scarf and booties just yet.
When it comes to fall, most people picture cozy sweaters, warm scarves and boots crunching through golden-brown leaves.
The only crunch underfoot here is from dried palm fronds, not autumn leaves.
In Florida, where temperatures are in the 80s well into October, fall fashion takes on a different form.
If you’re wondering how to stay stylish while sweating in the heat, we’ve got you covered.

Since Florida weather is unpredictable, light layers are key and clothing should be breathable and loose-fitting.
Stay away from heavy fabrics such as wool that you’ll want to yank off as soon as you step outside. Instead, try lightweight materials like cotton or linen or opt for flannels and cardigans.
These can easily be layered with a tank top or t-shirt underneath.
“To still get the layering effect in outfits, I like to thrift sheer pieces from the lingerie section of the thrift store and layer those over my tops in place of sweaters and jackets,” said sophomore studio art major Shaine Mereness.
To still get the fall vibes, you can incorporate fall colors or patterns, like orange and brown, into your outfit. Who doesn’t love a fun pumpkin or leaf pattern to spice things up?
Other clothing pieces are jeans, skirts or dresses that can be added to the ensemble. Knitted boleros have also been a popular option to add on top of your outfit.

Maxi and mini skirts are a staple fall piece and can be layered on top of tights.
There are many ways to elevate your fall outfit, including fun jewelry, handbags or a lightweight hat like a beanie.
“I love a medium-sized handbag that can carry my Macbook but also has space for lip gloss, perfume and smaller items,” said sophomore architecture major Emma Nygaard.
Fall footwear options can also be swapped out to be more Florida-friendly. Some options worth checking out are Dr. Marten Mary Janes or Boston clogs from Birkenstock.
At the end of the day, fall in Florida is less about bundling up and more about looking cool while staying cool.
